Kisgyón

Kisgyón

Beech-groves, hornbeams with oaks, sinkholes with hidden caves and many tourist trails assure that wondering in the woods of Kisgyón is enjoyable. Two of the notable places of the region are the Flintstone-trench holding fossils and the romantic Burok Valley. This is the 9th section of the National Blue Trail.

We are only reminded of the former coal-mine by the memorial of the martyrs and the neighbouring coal-sorter. The former houses of the miners left behind were taken over by the lovers of nature in Fejér County and there was a Friends of Nature Estate created in Kisgyón with 12 cabins for hikers, which has been developing and improving ever since. Even if you stay in Kisgyón for several days discovering the surrounding region will keep you busy for days and it is an ideal base for excursion on foot, by bike or by car to Bodajk, Mór, Zirc, Tés or Várpalota. The most well-known part of the Kisgyón woods is the Flintstone-trench. The Flintstone-trench is a dry ditch running from the north-eastern side of the Hárs Hills to the woods of Kisgyón. It is definitely worth walking along the Burok Valley the main part of which spreads from Királyszállás to the village of Bakonykút. We must reckon with a hard hike because of the trees knocked down by storms, the lush undergrowth and rocks obstructing our way. Today the undisturbed woods of the valley are protected. The walls of the gorge-like valley, that is 50-80 metres deep on average, are rather steep and in some places they are vertical rock faces. One of the characteristics and spectacular aspects of the valley are the karst formations such as groups of rocks, towers of rock and caves formed by freezing. The flora of the valley is very varied with many plants left here from the ice-age and it has a very rich variety of birds and insects, too. The region holds many other attractions and points of interest. The winding valley of Hosszú-Kígyós surrounded by a beautiful forest will leave you with many lasting experiences. At its entrance is a Forest Sanctuary built by VADEX with a hunters’ hut at its upper end reminding us of the pages of a story-book or there is the impressive view of the rampart of the Csikling Castle. Following the National Blue Trail we can comfortably walk to the nearby Csősz plains where we will be provided with many interesting pieces of professional information visiting the research house of the Alba Regia Cave-exploration Group

Duna Eco-Tourism Centre, Rácalmás

This centre is in the heart of the country, barely sixty kilometres from Budapest, right next to the Rácalmási-Islands Nature Reserve. The ethnographic and culinary exhibitions, craftsmen’s workshops and the interactive hall with multi-media will prove to be a nice and useful way to relax.

A newly-built nature trail leads us through with seventeen big colourful information boards, rain-shelters and bird-watching spots. For the lovers of active relaxation the sheltered bike path leading all the way to Dunaújváros and the harbour accommodating even up to fifty boats will present unforgettable experiences. The more adventurous can step into a motorboat or a punt and can travel round the island on water. It is also worth mentioning that leaving the capital on the Danube the harbour is the first point that not only provides an opportunity to stop but also to camp for the night. The staff at the Eco-Centre are ready to provide guides for individual or group excursions and they also organise boat-trips on the Smaller and Greater Danube also tourists have an opportunity to do some fishing, take pictures of nature or to do some bird-watching. Eco-paradise

Eco-paradise

Fejér County is formed into one of the nation’s most varied regions by the rich flora and fauna of the lush forests, the beauty of the seemingly never-ending plains, the sensual dance of the sunshine sparkling on the surface of the water and the calm romanticism of village cottages.

Begin by recharging your batteries in Székesfehérvár! On the 6.6-kilometer-long Sostó nature-trail with its bird-watching tower, the botanical paradise of the sand mine, the European bee-eater and sand martin colonies of the shooting hills and the red-footed falcon colony of the water-works forest have all been given national protection. Out of the 70 species nesting here the ferruginous duck, the grey leg goose, the grey heron, the purple heron, the white stark, the spoonbill, the great egret, the marsh-harrier and the European kestrel are all of great importance. Amongst the many thousands of protected plants we can find the rare orchids, the astralagus, the blackstonia, the white helleborine, the moorland spotted orchid, the dianthus and the southern globethistle.

If you still feel like hiking, in whatever direction you set out you will come upon the miracles of nature in the air, on the ground and in the water. You must not miss the Pákozd-Sukoró Arboretum and the mystical Rocking Stones in the Velence Hills just as the exhibitions of the Vértes Nature Park, nature trails and Animal Park. In the Alcsút Arboretum we can witness a miracle in the evening in June when thousands of fireflies swarm glowing as many small green lamps. We can also admire the rich avifauna of Lake Velence for days in the Dinnyés Bird Reserve. We will be filled with endless harmony by the miracles of unspoilt nature, rare plants, geological treasures, paths running through unrivalled landscapes, trickling creeks, mysterious caves and the glimpse of curious animals. Whether on foot or by bike, on horseback or with a cart or maybe by “puszta-busz”(a covered wagon). Go ahead! A few days in paradise…
