The statue of Domonkos Kálmáncsehi

The statue of Domonkos Kálmáncsehi

The statue made  by Béla Ohmann commemorates the exceptional 15th century humanist scientist, provost of the town, guard of the basilica. For a long time he had been thought to have the  St. Ann Chapel  built so the left hand of the statue rests on the scale model of the chapel.

The humanist scientist and diplomat of the Renaissance period lived during the reign of Matthias King. Between 1474- 1495 he was the provost of the town and the guard of the cathedral. The statue - was made of limestone,-  is turning towards the cathedral, one of his hand holding a scroll- the establishing charter of the chapel, his other hand is resting on the scale model of the chapel. At his feet a lion is lying. The wooden  copy  of Kálmáncsehi Domonkos's statue can be found in Budapest National Gallery.
