Károlyi Castle, Fehérvárcsurgó

Károlyi Castle, Fehérvárcsurgó

The descendants of the family have restored the Károlyi Castle that was formerly used in the war as a relief centre for the sick, staff accommodation, war-hospital and barracks and which now functions as a gallery, hotel and restaurant.

The fate of this building is very similar to other buildings of its kind. The many changes in function and operators did no good to the building. From 1995 the National Monument Trust (MÁG) prepared the programme for preserving the building and its surroundings. In 1997 the József Károlyi Foundation established by György Károlyi living in Paris and the MÁG made a co-operation contract to renovate and utilise the castle. The cultural encounter centre presently operating in the castle is a member of the Association of the European Cultural Encounter Centers www.accr.org. One of the aims of the castle is to fit into the tourism trends by helping the hotel and catering sections. This plan won the emblem of the UNESCO Cultural World Heritage Decade in 1995. Alongside the scientific and cultural activities of the foundation the Károlyi Castle Development and Management Ltd. is continuously developing the castle.
